Have You Seen My Spice Cabinet?
Have You Seen My Spice Cabinet?
It’s pretty well organized. I’ve got 25 little glass containers with sustainably sourced bamboo screw-on tops. Each one has a nice printed label with the name of the spice it contains. And yes, I use all 25 of them in the course of a month or so of cooking. I probably use 6–8 for any given meal. The spices share a space with some other kitchen stuff, namely a bunch of neatly-lined up water glasses arranged by size and pattern. I went in the cabinet one evening to grab a glass of water for a friend. He laughed and said, “I’ve never seen anything like that! You’re like the most organized person I know!”
I’m sure he meant it as hyperbole. But yes, I like things organized. Some would argue I’m a perfectionist, or perhaps a bit obsessive. I’m really not. I used to be. But I’m cured. I let go of the skin-grating stress of having to have everything perfect. Like that last sentence. I’m going to let it go. I used “have” in two ways in the same sentence. That used to drive me up a wall. Now, I’m ok with it. In fact, I think my weird and wonderful use of language is one of my superpowers. Or at least my weird is. Quirks make us who we are. That includes lining up all the spices in a handy little way and (almost) obsessively organizing things, partly because the rest of the world is in a general on-going state of chaos and crumble.
